Clinchfield Railroad Track Diagram
Researched and Chronicled by Scott Jessee
September 1946 James A. Goforth, Clinchfield Railroad’s Assistant Engineer for Design and Construction updated the Dispatcher’s Track Diagram. This intricate 14” x 30” grid drawing covers the railroad’s 277 mile route and shows tunnels, bridges, agency stations, non-agency stations, water tanks, coal towers, operator’s offices, turntables, sidings, yards, and other tracks.
One inch separates the mile posts and it is amazing how in only a couple of inches that the layout of Dante, Kingsport, and Erwin yard can be drawn. Even though the train dispatchers knew siding capacities, running times, and other track locations, this diagram was an important reminder and could be used when reviewing incidents such as derailments, slides, and other track related issues.
In only a few years with the implementation of Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), the dispatchers would have a “big board” to review the railroad.
